Friday Night Session

Crimes Against Pop

  • Playing hip-hop, pop and eclectica, Paul Haswell and Carolyn Wright formed Crimes Against Pop in London in 2003, playing at their own monthly club as well as venues and festivals across the UK. In the 2010s they moved the party to Asia, and have been playing in Hong Kong, as well as producing a weekly music radio show on RTHK, ever since.

2023 marks the 20th anniversary of Crimes Against Pop, as well as the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. Expect Paul and Carolyn to celebrate in style with a party set mixing old-school classics and bangers as well as the energy (and tailoring) they have become known for.

South Canton Soul Train

  • For those tired of the usual Lan Kwai Fong dance-floor fillers, a novel club night might provide relief. Named after the iconic American music and dance TV series from the '70s, South Canton Soul Train transports Hong Kong back to the disco era, featuring a globe-trotting collection of funky beats and an “East meets West vibe.” DJ Fergus Heathcote, the driving force behind this DJ collective, established the events as a celebration of regional music, shedding light on Asia's vibrant pop scene of the late 20th century. After relocating from Hong Kong to the UK at 17 for studies, Fergus refined his skills at parties across the country. Returning to Hong Kong in 2016, he grew weary of the monotonous music at Lan Kwai Fong clubs, motivating him to curate his own nights. Delving through vinyl records at Paul Au's Sham Shui Po shop reignited Fergus's appreciation for Canto-pop and pan-Asian pop. At Soul Train evenings, these newfound treasures meld with funk, soul, disco, and hip-hop classics. Expect to hear Canto-pop godfather Roman Tam Pak-sin alongside early Grandmaster Flash.

MouseFX

  • Hong Kong-born singer/producer MouseFX has been flying the flag for reggae in the city since the 1990s, whether in bands such as Ice Stone 2, Crazy Lion and Sensi Lion, appearing alongside HK’s most respected sound system crews, or as a solo vocalist. With his distinctively Cantonese take on roots reggae and deep knowledge of the genre, MouseFX connects the dots from Hong Kong to Jamaica.

Uptown Rockers

  • Festival favourites Uptown Rockers have been bossing the decks for nearly two decades and show no signs of slowing up, having recently added new member Mengzy to their lineup. Famed for their genre-defying sets that run the gamut from disco classics and acid house to punk-funk and yacht rock, the trio are set to close the festival’s opening night with an hour of floor-filling, beer-spilling good times.

Drag Bingo with Madame Mincemeat

  • Spawned during CLOCKENFLAP 2015 (an annual Music and arts festival in Hong Kong), Madame Mincemeat is the embodiment of wit and sass with a touch of class. No stranger to the mic, Mincemeat has been enthralling audiences from Drag brunch to boardrooms, bingo to fundraisers and is completely at home where the drinks are plentiful and the music is loud.

Subversive and ridiculous, Madame Mincemeat is the ideal antidote for the seriousness of life
